I took this photo on the way home from story hour and it reminded me so much of one of the verses I read this morning in Gen. 24:48 I praised the Lord … who had led me on the right road.. – Especially since there are 6 little geese in the picture, the number of children I have that I pray so very often for God to keep their feet on the path that leads to Him! I pray that even when I feel confused, lost, things don’t look like what I expected, feeling so out of place like a duck out of water walking across freezing cold hard pavement… that I don’t give up, that I keep walking even if things don’t make sense until I reach the other side…other side of heaven. Just a few verse up from the one I just mentioned is Genesis 24:40 when Abraham has a servant that is asking what to do if things don’t go as hoped. Abraham replies in verse 40, The Lord before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family. (41) Then, when you go to my clan, you will be released from my oath even if they refuse to give her to you-you will be released from my oath. – So I’m no scholar for sure but what I got is that after Abraham was told in Genesis 17:1 I am God Almighty; walk before me… he did, and walking with God is different than merely just living…walking with someone is an experience in which you talk and get to know each other, an action which can warrant a growing relationship and I believe Abraham did just that so when his servant asked him, well so Ab what if this great plan doesn’t go according to plan…Ab knew God so well that he could respond that he knew God would bring about success from this journey and it may not look like exactly the way we have planed but if not it will be a better plan! Abraham knew his God to be faithful to His promises and a faithful provider and he trusted His ways and plans above his own. Psalm 16:8 says I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. WOW! I think this is how Abraham knew, he kept the Lord always before him…not perfect we know but he kept the faith. Which should greatly encourage all of us! An example I found today for myself on how Abraham kept God ever before him was in Gen 23:16 when Ab buys the place to bury his wife Sarah. First in Gen. 23:4 Ab calls himself an alien and a stranger among the Hittites but in verse 5 the Hittites reply sir you are a mighty prince among us, in verse 7 though they call him a mighty prince Abraham bows humbly before the people (Romans 12:3 Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought – Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.) It took 3 times before he was allowed to buy the field and it reminded me of Gen 14:22-23 when Abraham would not accept anything from the king of Sodom so that no one could say they made Abraham rich…everyone would know it was God, God would get all the glory. And I think this could be one reason he wanted to buy the field…he was showing faith in the promise that God would give them the promised land right where he wanted to buy the land to bury Sarah…he didn’t want it said that it was given by any other way or hand…no one would tithe on the glory due His name. God said He would provide somehow, someway, someday and he was willing to trust Him for it. If anyone would know about God’s faithfulness in provision Abraham would as he had already gone through the events of Gen. 22 and offering Isaac his only son to God! So then ahead in Gen. 23:19 we read that Abraham did bury his wife in the land of Canaan and in that culture, people had a strong desire to be buried with their fathers in their land and by purchasing that land in Canaan Abraham was indicating his hearts full commitment to God’s promise to one day give the land to His people…Canaan was his new homeland and where Abraham was buried we read in Gen. 25:7-10. I think of how that must have pleased and touched God’s heart so very much as Abraham bought that field..indicating his love, his trust in who God was by acting out his faith. So God I pray you would give me such an unshakable faith in You as I desire to walk with You ever before me. Don’t let me get caught up in what I don’t understand, or the waiting period…or whatever…help me to trust You, to seek You, to know You more and help me to keep putting my imperfect webbed feet one in front of the other in a walk with You all they way to the other side of heaven.
