Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure… Genesis 43:23
This afternoon I sat at the kitchen table playing play-doh with my two littles who are not yet in school. My son said, mom look I made a clam shell with a pearl! I told him how creative that was and the teacher in me just had to explain how a pearl is really formed. As you know its a grain of sand that has gotten inside the shell and annoys the clam so that he works it over and over rubbing it into a pearl, something of a treasure. This reminded me of when Joseph’s brothers were so very afraid as they were taken to Josephs home -They thought… He wants to attack us AND overpower us AND seize us as slaves AND take our donkeys. (from Gen. 43:18) (Funny yet not so funny how fear, our grain of sand, can distort reality right!) However Joseph’s steward says in verse 23 “Its alright,” Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure… – I think that steward spoke better than he knew! I believe that was the day God gave Joseph and his family a glimpse of the upper side of the tapestry of his life. Joseph had served God faithfully all through the tangles and messes he didn’t understand and in God’s great faithfulness allowed Joseph to now see and say- You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Gen. 50:20 Do not give up on your grain of sand…allow God to work a treasure in you, you never thought possible.
