Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Joshua 5:13-14
Reading this battle conversation between Joshua and the Lord’s army commander I was reminded of the many battle planning conversations God has graciously allowed me to overhear and intervene (much to my four sons disappointment I’m sure, however I’M sure it’s prolonged their lifespan)! I also got to thinking of some of my own battles.
The Lord’s army commander replied to Joshua that he was on NEITHER side! How quickly I can make battles about me! It’s not about who’s side God is on… it’s about having been commissioned to fight well in GODS battle. 2 Chron. 20:15 This is what the Lord says to you: Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. 1 Sam. 17:47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands. Ex. 14:14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.
So what battle are you in? To where or what have you been commissioned to right now? Joshua went up to the Lord’s army commander and received direction… Joshua 3:3-4 says, …follow it. Then you will know… sometimes we just need to start moving (sometimes that means start moving toward stillness!) …and be ready… Joshua 3:5 Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow… get close to God (in prayer, in His Word) and listen… Joshua 3:9-10 Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God. This is how you will know…
We can trust Him with the battles He has commissioned us to. But like Joshua we need to be willing to “see” with eyes of faith. In Joshua 6:2 God tells Joshua “see” I have delivered your enemy into your hands… yet it had not actually happened yet. Joshua needed to trust and be willing to be apart of GOD’s battle however God would commission him to be apart of it. Are we willing to do the same? Trust that God will surly bring glory to His Name, His kingdom, through our lives if we do (prolonging our lives…eternally)!
