Although it is true that I am near of kin, there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I. Ruth 3:12
Talk about a wrench thrown into a plan! The above verse, really?! Boaz is such an upstanding man and maybe its the romantic in me but I think he was smitten with Ruth the minute he first saw her working in his field (2:5). I know God loves Boaz’s heart as He includes him in the lineage of Jesus! So why when Ruth proposes marriage to him can’t he just go ahead and live happily ever after, why the side track of the first in line kinsman-redeemer? Two things…
I believe sometimes we are tested to strengthen our faith or someone elses. Boaz could have chosen to play ignorant or “forget” that there was someone ahead of him in line to marry Ruth but he didn’t. He desired very much to marry Ruth but he proved he could be the man of integrity God made him to be. In the midst of temptation he chose the high road. Even if it cost him Ruth, he would trust God’s perfect will rather than beg for His permissive will.
Secondly, God doesn’t have to always call the qualified… He is more than capable to qualify whom He calls. Boaz proved his trust in the One who was bigger than his circumstances. Boaz was not the most qualified to marry Ruth but he took a chance to walk with his God against the odds. Boaz showed that he believed if it be God’s will, the odds wouldn’t matter.
The rest is history! Boaz, against the odds wins the hand of Ruth in marriage! And he didn’t have to cheat or manipulate the truth to do it either. He did have to exercise his faith and trust in the One who longs to bless us and prove Himself faithful. This “wrench” in the story might just actually be a “jack”… to jack our eyes and faith up to desire and trust Him, His perfect will and way above our own.
Like a good dad making sure his kids car has a spare and they know how to locate the jack… our heavenly Father has made sure His Book is well packed with all the necessary tools for life. It’s up to us if we choose to use them.
