But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD. 1 Chronicles 11:18
David sets such a wonderful example for us in humility. In 1 Chronicles 11 three men are brave enough to break through enemy lines just to get their highly respected leader a drink of water!! However David will not drink it because he recognizes that he is not worthy of this kind of devotion and so offers the water up to the LORD. Great leaders are followed and respected because of the depth of their servant-hood. David was greatly respected but he clearly recognized and honored the One who had given him such a position among these valiant men and he did not hesitate or miss an opportunity to turn their eyes, their hearts and honor to his God.
David knew that God was his Strength. He knew that those who would fear God and seek Him would lack no good thing. He constantly placed himself in a humble position even when others urged him to places of honor. 1 Sam. 18 reveals another scene in which David was offered the position of son-in-law to the king and David responds “Who am I…” (vs. 18) “I’m only a poor man and little known” (vs. 23) Yet just a few verses back the people were singing his successes among the streets!!
God was able to use David in mighty ways because he knew he was created for God and not God for him. David kept a mindset of humility, O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him? Man is like a breath; Psalm 144:3-4 David took hold of the Truth that we are more sinful than we ever dare dream yet more loved than we ever dare hope! Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 1 Peter 5:6
