I will give you a wise and discerning heart… 1 Kings 3:12
So often we want to take home the model right?! Out shopping we find the perfect assembled bike, the perfect assembled entertainment center, the pre-assembled whatever and that’s the one we want; but that ones not for sale-“its the model”. We have to take the one off the shelf, in a flat box, that comes with instructions on how to assemble it – ourselves.
Isn’t that like life? We want the end result… the romantic marriage, the respectful children, the successful career, the perfectly trained dog (we just got a puppy); but we so often try and skip the building process or like me, sometimes just look at the picture on the front of the box and try and make all the pieces come together on my own because who has time for reading instructions?! Then we cry out to God and we have no idea why things are in such a mess. Really?!
He has given us His Word, His instruction manual for everything in life we will ever face. Are we reading it, following it? Solomon in 1 Kings 3:9 asks God for a discerning heart and in verse 12 God says “I will give you a wise and discerning heart.” Solomon wasn’t asking for that so that people would admire how smart he was, he was asking from a sincere position of humility. Realizing he was just a branch on the vine of God (John 15:5). Solomon wanted to steward well the life God had given him, he wanted to do things God’s way and for His glory and so Solomon asked for more of God in him.
Solomon didn’t ask for wealth, riches, honor, death of his enemies, long life, food, clothing or drink. No, he didn’t ask for the big picture or for things to be easier. He said I can’t do this, build any of this, well, with out You, I need more of You! Give me a heart and a mind like Yours Lord. This pleased God so much that He not only granted Solomon’s request but added on all that he hadn’t asked for as well!
So maybe today the issue isn’t getting to the end result quickly, maybe its about the process, and I know the process is never fun, and often strenuous and painful, but that strain can strengthen if we don’t give up. Maybe start today to read the Instructions He’s already given you, for the step you’re in and allow Him to show up in miraculous ways, revealing more of His heart and mind to you that you would have totally missed out on if you had just taken home the model. In the end I think you’ll have found He’s built something in and through you, more beautiful and lasting than any pre-built model you could have ever dreamed of.
