Refrain and Resist

…God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds… Daniel 1:17

Refrain: to avoid, hold back, stop oneself

Resist: to be proof against, withstand

Ever wonder in a situation or circumstance if it would be better to refrain or resist? I’m grateful we have a God who knows best and is able to help us in our time of need.

How was Daniel able to speak with wisdom and tact when faced with Arioch, the commander of the kings guard who had gone out to put all the wise men to death (that included Daniel himself!) (Daniel 2:16)? Because Daniel was always seeking the presence of God. Luke 21:15 For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.

Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono. But they were scheming to harm me; so I sent messengers to them with this reply: ” I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you? Nehemiah 6:2-3 Nehemiah knew God had started something GREAT in him (he says, “I am carrying on a great project…”) and he refused to let mean people detour him from God’s calling on his life.

When you feel you have lost your purpose, your “why”, you don’t know if you should refrain or resist anymore; it all just seems to have spun out of perspective… we can remember… it’s still crystal clear to our God. We can trust the One with all knowledge and understanding.

YOU too, were chosen before the creation of the world for a GREAT purpose! (Eph. 1:4) What God starts He promises to finish! (Phil. 1:6) So do not refrain from allowing Him to work out His GREAT project in your life! Rather, Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
