A “Loose Leash” Walk

…till the word of the LORD proved him true. Psalm 105:19

We have a 6 month old lab puppy that is easily 60+ pounds and growing strong. My husband and I, in the wee early mornings of sunrise like to take our pup on a walk or should I say he likes to take us for an athletic workout!! Though we appreciate his love for life we are trying to show him a better way to experience it, known as the “loose leash walk” as the trainer would call it, allowing us to lead him.

Some how through the blurred vision of sweat running into my eyes as we “walk” our pup I notice how tightly he is straining against the leash to pull ahead. It’s quite comical and I might even laugh if I could catch my breath! I’m reminded that this vision is probably what God sees as He looks at me! He calls us to FOLLOW Him as the Good Shepherd. He knows the best way yet I still find myself running ahead trying to “help” God much too often!! How silly of me!

Psalm 105:17-21 and he sent a man before them- Joseph, sold as a slave. They bruised his feet with shackles, his neck was put in irons, till what he foretold came to pass, till the word of the LORD proved him true. The king sent and released him, the ruler of peoples set him free. He was made master of his household, ruler over all he possessed…

The Word of the Lord proves true every time. Joseph was severely mistreated yet he walked with God, stayed by His side. Didn’t give in when the world tried to discourage him, and when he had no idea why certain things were taking place. Joseph remained faithfully by God’s side as God continued to teach, mold and shape him into the man He always intended. Joseph could have missed it if he had run ahead and tried to “fix” and figure out ways to “help” God, or worse, completely walked away from God. Joseph let God be his leader, and allowed His voice to be the one playing loudest in his mind, the one he would hold onto as absolute Truth when everything else desired to derail him.

Will we choose to enjoy a “loose leash walk” with our God today? Trusting that He is faithful and true and His ways are best and if we FOLLOW the One who loved us enough to die for us He will make our path of next steps straight! He desires to give us a hope and a future – do we believe that enough to act on it? To be still and know that He is a God that is able to work out all things for good?!
