We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19
Reading the Bible is good for a great many reasons but its very useful in practical application. We could just ask Jochabed (Moses’ mom). How do you think she go the idea to make the little basket, a mini ark, to save baby Moses in?! My guess is she knew and pondered over the story of Noah and how God had instructed him in creating an ark coated in pitch to save a people. It’s amazing how applicable He makes His Word even after all this time.
Ezra 9:15 (Old Testament) says, …Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it not one of us can stand in your presence. And Romans 3:23 (New Testament) ..all have sinned and fallen short of the gory of God.. That is why we needed a Savior, Jesus.
In John 5 during the time Jesus walked this earth, at the pool of Bethesda something amazing happens. This pool was surrounded by five covered colonnades. The number 5 represents grace – Jesus was pierced 5 times on the cross: both hands, both feet and His side. Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. Amazing grace!!
Around this pool many who were disabled gathered because it was believed when the water stirred the first one in the pool would be healed. This particular man that Jesus approached that day had been there as in invalid for 38 years. John 5:8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
Amazing! But he didn’t get up because he was healed – he was healed so he got up! Such a picture of God’s amazing grace!! We love because he first loved us! By God’s grace He loves us just how we are right now which enables us to then get up and become all that He created us to be. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- not by works, so that no one can boast.
Freely I have received who now today can I practically freely give amazing grace to, whether I feel its deserved or not, out of reverence to my Heavenly Father who loved me knowing all the ways I fall short and before I could even love Him back…
