He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. Psalm 112:7
If there was ever someone up against some bad news Nehemiah seemed to come face to face with it around every corner! However Nehemiah 5:15 lets us know that out of reverence for his God he rose above the fray. We can always extend kindness out of reverence to our God whether the humanity around us seems to warrant it or not. Following the example of Jesus as He extends His love to us when we least deserve it. (1 John 4:19)
Nehemiah faced much human opposition to the work God had called him to do… Neh. 6:9,13 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “There hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.” But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.” (13) He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.
The enemy knows his time is short and no one can thwart God’s plan (Job 42:2) but if he can render you ineffective within that plan he’s won the battle over you. However John 10:28 says, I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. He who holds you is stronger but you have free will to believe the enemies lies or to keep your heart steadfast, trusting in the Lord even when you face bad news, a situation you do not understand and seems to big to handle or even face, let alone bring the thing to completion.
Just as in the life of Nehemiah who persevered in trusting his God in the face of adversity and bad news, allowing Him to fulfill His promise… He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion (Phil. 1:6). Our job is to trust and God is the One to work all things out (Romans 8:28). So upon the completion of the work God had called Nehemiah to do 6:16 says, all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God. He is faithful.
Jesus please grant me ever increasing trust in You. To remember in the face of good and bad news that you say, do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 May you be glorified through my life, in the good the bad and the ugly.
