Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” Matthew 17:4-5
I find this Scripture almost comical because I can so vividly put myself in Peter’s place! “Lord, I can do this for You, and I can try to do this, and that too! Lord I’ll get started right away don’t worry.” While all the while He is standing there looking at me shaking His head as He watches me try and run all around without mine!! He interjects with exclamation point no less like He did with Peter, “Just LISTEN to Me!”
How often I get carried away trying to save or create the perfect situation or circumstance and do, do, do and all He wants is for me to do is listen! After all how do I know I’m “doing” the right thing if I haven’t taken time to really listen to what He desires most from my life? All the gifts under the tree are good but only a few have my name on them. Am I sacrificing the greatest thing He has called me too by doing all the good things I see?
Read Luke 11:33-36.
Jesus gives light, He is Light. There is nothing wrong with the message. If we can’t see the Light its not because it’s not bright enough, the Light is perfect. We may just need to get a better pair of eyes to allow the light to enter! Same as it is with our ears. His sheep hear His voice but are our ears tuned into the right frequency? His voice is clear, if we don’t hear maybe we need better ears?!
So how do we get better ears and eyes to receive more of Him? Maybe I need to stop running around like a chicken with no head making random suggestions and doing random good things and just be still; just listen. Just sit in His presence in prayer and reading His Word. Taking time to get to know His character in Scripture so that when I hear and see things in this world I can better discern through His Word if it aligns with Truth.
Often I believe He does speak and He does give direction but we are too busy to receive it. Jesus, please help me to just stop and listen and receive Your presence.
John 7:18 states, He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Lord I want to be about Your honor and Your glory. I think Peter did too yet sometimes it’s so easy to get caught up in self and what we can do FOR You. If we just took a minute to listen to how ridiculous that sounds we would stop and listen for You and how You are already at work in life around us. If we are willing to listen and possibly receive a Word from You that might even contradict our expectations it may then appear clear as to how You want us to join You in Your work.
Fix my eyes Jesus on You, fix my ears to Your voice and fix my heart so that it’s one desire is just for more of You.
