…and they felt no shame. Genesis 2:25
Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden knew no shame. Genesis 1 :27 states, So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. We are children of The Most High God created in His image both male and female!! He did not create us to know shame! Guilt maybe, yes, guilt makes us aware of the wrong we DID and makes us RUN TO Jesus for forgiveness and restoration. Shame says WHO we are is wrong and causes us to STAND STILL in fear, regret, self pity…it makes us want to run and hide…shame renders us ineffective. So if God didn’t make us to know shame what do you think the enemy is going to try and throw on us every chance he gets!!?! SHAME! As believers in Jesus he can’t steal our salvation but he can steal our fruit; and shame is just the way to do it!
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. John 10:28
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full. John 10:10
This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. John 15:5
Because of Jesus death on the cross in our place He says shame OFF you yet the enemy is still yelling in our ears, shame ON you! There are three questions found in Genesis 3 that are just as pertinent now as they were then. Lets look together…
First in Genesis 3:1 the enemy says, …“Did God really say…” ? Doesn’t he still do that today!!?! Yes! This world is always trying to get us to question what God really said! Is there really only one way to heaven? Do you really have to treat others that way? Are you really strong in your weakness? Can you really move that mountain in faith? Are you really suppose to forgive that much? Did God really say…don’t you think He meant….? You can fill in the blanks all you want and if you do not know what God REALLY does say in His Word than you will fall just as Adam and Eve did in the Garden to the enemies lies and twisted half truths.
When we find our selves fallen having accepted the covering of shame from the enemy we find ourselves in hiding… often in plain sight. Genesis 3:9 states another question this time by God. “Where are you?” God asks Adam and Eve after they had disobeyed him and listened to the enemies lies. Of course God knew where they were (Psalm 139:7-10) but I wonder if the question was more spiritual…and from a hurting heart… why has your heart wondered away from Mine? Remember guilt makes us run to Him for forgiveness and restoration yet shame makes us run and hide. Jesus hates the sin but loves the sinner and Satan can’t afford for us to believe that my friends.
Last question to take a look at today is in Genesis 3:11 … “Who told you…” ? It’s like Jesus is saying at what point did you start listening to someone else’s voice, at what point did you begin to believe the lie that you are not who I say you are?! You are My child created in My image for a purpose I planned before creation! (Eph. 2:10, Jer. 1:5)
Beloved, if we do not know the Truth He speaks to us and over us… if we do not find our significance, self worth and esteem, our validation from Him alone we will fall to the lies of the enemy. We will fall into the garment of shame which won’t rob us of salvation, Satan doesn’t have that kind of power, but it will render us ineffective for His kingdom. Why would we give the enemy that kind of power over us?! You are royalty in Christ! Jesus brings good news to the poor, binds up the broken hearted, proclaims freedom for the captive and release from darkness for the prisoners, He came to provide comfort to those who mourn, to replace ashes with a crown of beauty for the display of His splendor! (Isaiah 61:1-3) How can we display His splendor hidden under a cloak of shame we alone chose to accept from the enemy?!
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us Hebrews 12:1
So child of God, made in His image, today lets choose to throw off the lies of the enemy and to tune our ears to the voice of Jesus Who died to set us free and Who conquered death through rising again so that we could truly live! Truly live, shame free, walking in freedom, basking in His love for you and bearing fruit to His glory and for the display of His splendor!
