“May it be to me as you have said.” Luke 1:38
First read Luke 1:26-38. I find Mary’s reaction to the news that she will give birth to God just astounding! Mary asks one question, ONE!! I think I would have a billion and one! God asks me to send my kids to public school rather than home school and I have a billion and one questions and concerns and worries over that!! I think I could stand to learn a few things from Mary about trusting in our God.
The one question Mary asks is in verse 34, How will this be… The angel of the Lord responds in verse 35, 37 …The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will over shadow you. For nothing is impossible with God. To which Mary simply replies in verse 38 I am the Lord’s servant… may it be to me as you have said.
WOW right! I mean no complaining, no debating, no excuses just, “How? Oh God’s going to be with me and all this will be done in His strength and power you say… because of course nothing is impossible with God… okay, I’m in!” Mary never said, … “but God I need the process… for real God, I’m a details person! And anyway this isn’t how we do things on earth, like, I’m with Joseph and we are engaged and we want to wait a couple years, just enjoy married life you know, than maybe a pet and THEN we will talk about a baby… God I already have a process and this is not it! Not only is this not my process, You are not giving me the details in Yours!!!” No, Mary didn’t say any of that and that’s probably exactly why God asked her instead of me!!
Mary was willing to let go of her process and having to know all the details and steps in His so that her hands, mind and heart were open to receiving His better way. We are called to make an impact for His Kingdom (Matthew 28:19-20) and like He did with Mary He promises He will be with us always (Joshua 1:9) and that it will be His power at work with in us (Ephesians 1:18-21) just like He told Mary. So Jesus help me to respond like Mary and let go of my process and having to know every detail of Yours before I’m willing to move forward. (Acts 1:8)
Jesus, You have called us to be salt and light in this world (Matthew 5:13-16) and we can’t make much of an impact in that way from a distance, so I pray You help me to let go of my processes so that I am open to receiving Your better way because you know things I don’t and understand things I can’t. Jesus please ever increase my trust in You so that I am willing to pitch my tent in faith wherever, whenever to advance Your Kingdom, even if it seems to be in the middle of the biggest mess. Isn’t that just what You did for me… The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 May we ever be forward moving into the living hope of who You are, all the while scooping up as many others with us along the way!
