But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness… Matthew 6:33
The word “seek” in the above verse is “zeteo” in greek and it means to crave. It is in the present tense and in an active voice meaning it is a command we should continue to do. Do we casually seek God just when we want to, it’s convenient, or feel we have a need in a particular moment, or do we intentionally fix our minds on Him so that He is our one desire. Do we crave more of Him above all else in life?
In John 18:38 Pilate asks Jesus, “What is truth?” but you will notice he doesn’t stick around for an answer! How often do we do the same thing and halfheartedly seek Him, praying prayers and never keeping watch for the answers?
Luke 23:23 states, But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. Whose shouts prevail in your life? The world’s or God’s? Pilate gives in to the loud demands of the world and hands Jesus over to be crucified. What a great reminder that when we start making excuses and exceptions for why we can’t crave Him as diligently as we did the day before the influence and cry of the world becomes louder in our hearts and minds and His whisper begins to fade away. It may begin as a slow fade and we may not realize our crave for Him has dulled and our ears, hearts, minds are no longer tuned to His voice until we find ourselves drowning in a deafening pit of the world’s lies.
Jesus, You tell us You are the Way the Truth and the Life (John 14:6), please renew a steadfast spirit within us that craves You afresh each morning. Jesus help us to crave You above our own will, agenda, schedule, relationships, success, finances… to put You first above all, to trust You above all. Help us to remember we live for an audience of One. One day we will pass away and eventually You will be the only One that remembers our lives and the impact we had for Your Kingdom will be all that matters. Help us to burn with such a craving for You that invigorates our own souls to live full out for You and ignites the world around us for Your glory.
