A “rainbow” painted just for you: What’s Your Filling? – Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 4:13-14 (ESV)

If you were a donut what would be your filling? Take a moment to discuss this with the person (6 feet) to your left… I’ll wait. I wish I could hear your answer however, that I’m sure, would lead to a 10 page rabbit trail discussion and I’m sure you have other plans for today! So let’s fill up with another discussion that Jesus had with a woman at a well.

In John 4 Jesus noticed a woman from all outward appearances to be filling her bucket with water, but since Jesus looks on the heart (1 Sam. 16:7) He could see the vast empty well in her heart she had been trying to fill with all the world’s remedies. Trying to fill that void in your heart with what the world has to offer will always leave us wanting more and saying, “Is this all there is?!” as we walk on to try the next void filling hoax. Here we see Jesus step in with a filling so other worldly it left not only her but her entire village saturated with the living water of Hope eternal!

Hebrews 9:2 tells us the Holy Place in the Tabernacle was filled with a lampstand and the sacred loaves of bread. Now this side of the new covenant we are called His Temple (1 Cor. 6:19) and Jesus has said I AM the Light of the World (John 8:12), I AM the Bread of Life (John 6:35)! The second room in the Tabernacle was Most Holy and held the law. This place was separated by a curtain allowing only a select few to enter. This curtain was torn in two at the cross making a way for ALL to access His throne (Matt. 27:51, Heb. 4:16)! Now this side of the new covenant Hebrews 8:10 tells us He will fill our minds and hearts with His Word!

All that we need to be transformed (Rom. 12:2) into a new creation can FILL us so we need not resolve to be conformed to this empty world!! Like Jesus told the woman at the well, He has living water that will never leave you thirsty but will well up within you to springs of eternal life! To know the Truth that you have been set free from the bondage of sin (Heb. 8:12), your consciences even purified so that you can walk free from the shadow of shame and from under the rock of regret to worship the living God (Heb. 9:14) with abundant life (John 10:10)!!

So the next time someone asks, “what’s your filling?” I pray we all can respond something like, “My filling is the all sufficient living water of Christ, the Light of the World, the Bread of Life, the Gate that keeps me safe (Jn. 10:9), The Peace (Is. 9:6), and Good shepherd (Jn. 10:11,14), who guides me, knows my name and it’s His voice of Truth which fills my mind and says to me, “dear child, I am enthralled , yes enthralled by your beauty (Psalm 45:11), you are wonderfully made (Ps. 139:14) and My precious masterpiece (Eph. 2:10). Come to Me and find rest (Matt. 11:28).”

I think we’d all agree there is no better filling than that of Jesus Christ. Dear God help us to crave Your filling, to love Your filling with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. (Mark 12:30)
