Distressed To De-Stressed

David was greatly distressed … But David found strength in the LORD his God. 1 Samuel 30:6 (NIV)

Greatly distressed… anyone out there ever experienced great distress in their lives? Not just stress but full out DIStressed, like I’m talking stress on steroids?!! It’s an easy downward spiral to begin wallowing in what we might call weakness. Self talk can be strongly negative in stressful moments or seasons. “Why couldn’t I balance it, why did I fail…again, why wasn’t I enough, why did my patience run short, why am I so weak, I should know better by now…” Seems to me the main character or subject in all that self talk is just that, SELF.

Psalm 68:19 (NIV) states, Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. How often?! DAILY God offers to bear our burdens! Matthew 11:28 (NIV) “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. How often and how long do we spend with God compared to that with our phone/social media? Is our focus more on self or our Sustainer in our distress?

1 John 4:4 (NIV) You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. Romans 8:11 tells us as believers in Jesus, His Spirit lives in us! The same Spirit that raised Him from the dead!!! Dear one, I don’t think you are weak even in your most distressed state! You cannot be weak with God Almighty inside of you.

Don’t call weak what may just be weary. David was greatly distressed and found strength where? Not in self talk or self help books or on social media but in the Lord his God. His God who is our God and who daily is strong enough to carry our burdens and beckons us moment by moment to come near and cast it all on His strong enough shoulders.

Do you feel stressed, burdened, just plain weary… don’t call it weak, call on the God who has a word morning by morning (daily) to sustain the weary (Isaiah 50:4).

I pray this week that in our most stressful moments we can all declare with our lives… (__Your name___) was greatly distressed… But (___ your name_____) found strength in the Lord his/her God.

Dear one, our weariness will never outweigh His sustaining strength, praise Him, oh praise Him!! He is the calorie free carbohydrate of life, so feast!!
