Cope Or Hope

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 44 of 52

Song picks of the week: “Yes I Will” By Vertical Worship “Crazy Beautiful You” by Leanna Crawford

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Cope Or Hope – As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. Psalm 18:30 NIV

In the wild adventure of Genesis 19 we read about cities burning and people turning to salt.. Well one city and one person but that’s enough to freak anyone out, right! Verse 17 finds heaven giving the good guy Lot, instructions to run for safety; escape to the mountains! But Lot responds that he is too afraid to go to the mountains; he’d much rather just head to a nearby village named “Zoar” or “little place”. How often have we decided we would rather play it “safe” and go to a “little place” rather than take on the “mountain”? We worry and fret and get all anxious over the “mountain” we see and take a detour away from God down a path we think is smaller, safer (as if we really know better than God!?!).

Dear one, God did not die on the cross for us to just COPE with and through life! He took the cross and resurrected from the grave so we could HOPE! Hope in ALL situations no matter how big the mountain looks! With Him, in Him, there will always be a way, always be living hope because that is just who He is! (John 14:6, 1 Peter 1:3) The full abundant life Jesus died to give us will always be found going His perfect way not necessarily His permissive way.

By verse 30 in Genesis 19 we find Lot leaving “Zoar” or that little place he thought would be safer, why?!, because he was afraid of the people there! Where does he head now?! To the mountains!!! God had the perfect plan all along! Let’s not wear ourselves down to merely coping through life because we have tired ourselves out in detours He never intended for us to take! Today let’s choose to trust the living, flawless, hope filled Word of God and truly LIVE abundantly in all things! Even the “mountain” things… cuz the way you climb a mountain is just one step at time and God promises to light our path one hope filled step at a time.

Why Bother?!

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 43 of 52

Song pick of the week: “Gotta Tell Somebody” by Don Francisco

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Why Bother?! – Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17

Ever felt a void that causes you to think… “Why even bother…” ?! Maybe you can’t go somewhere like you used to, can’t do things like before, I mean why even bother putting anything on the calendar… “normals” not comin’ back the voids just too big and too dark. Hmmmm this reminds me of Genesis 1:2 when the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep…. But wait!!! What’s that next sentence?! And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. God was present in the blank space!! Then God spoke and light appeared and land and animals and vegetation and good golly even human beings!!! All this out of a dark VOID!!! Seems we have a God who specializes in work over dark voids!

Remember back in Mark 5, the man who came to Jesus because he needed healing for his 12 year old daughter? Well, right about verse 35 The voices around this man begin to speak telling him hope was gone, his daughter had died and it was too late… “Why bother the teacher anymore?” Have you been there? Why bother, hope’s dead. Don’t give up before reading verse 36, Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” He didn’t say that command would be easy, He just gives it to us all. Then what did Jesus do with all those “Don’t bother…” voices?! Check out verse 40… He kicks them out! How many negative voices are you tolerating?!

There is one Voice who’s whisper deserves a listening ear… make sure you can hear it.

That day the father took up faith in the One voice that can speak hope over EVERY void. That dad didn’t get what he expected that day… he came seeking healing but by way of a very dark void he received a resurrection of fresh life!! (verse 42) Our God is about exceeding our expectations, His thoughts and ways are so far above ours and always best! Will you get on board with the process He is working out in this season of your life? Why bother you ask… because you aren’t going to want to miss what no eye has seen and what no ear has heard, which God is preparing for those that love Him! He’s always moving and I believe dark voids are quite possibly where He begins His very best work!

Fertile Dust And Ashes

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 42 of 52

Song pick of the week: “Don’t Tread On Me” by We The Kingdom

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Fertile Dust And Ashes – …even though I am but dust and ashes. Genesis 18:27 NLT

In Isaiah 61:3 God tells us He came to bring beauty from ashes. On top of His Word God has given us a visual aid known as tephra, which is the scientific name for volcanic ash. To make a long story short, over time this tephra makes AMAZINGLY fertile soil! Who would have thought that a volcano, something most would label as a catastrophe could produce one of the most wonderful natural phenomenons?!!

Our Creator has not forgotten we were made from dust (Psalm 103:14). Oftentimes we find ourselves making ashes of things and sometimes things just seem to fall in ash all around us whether we had anything to do with it or not! The enemy of our souls would sure like us to believe ash ends with nothing big enough for even hope to glue together. It can be a pretty convincing argument at times. Maybe that’s why God made the volcano so eruptive! He had to get our attention, to grab our downcast gaze and fix it on the explosive Light of His Truth!

It may take time dear one just like it takes time for tephra. But EVERYtime without fail God’s hope does not disappoint (Romans 5:5)! Beauty will rise from the ashes if we will remain in His hand and look to the Light of His Truth. Jesus died to defeat, sin, death and the devil. He rose on the third day and now nothing in Him stays dead ash for He is the Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25)!

If you find yourself in ashes today, believe in Jesus, for then it’s on phenomenally fertile ground you stand on dear one; for He makes beauty from ashes!

Paper Wings Made Strong

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 41 of 52

Song pick of the week: “Paper Planes” by Adam Agee

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Paper Wings Made Strong – Isaiah 40:31 NIV But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Remember when you were a kid folding paper airplanes? You chose a piece of paper, folded it just so and took it to the tip top of the staircase and then launched it with all your might! Pretty fun… unless you were that piece of paper. Oftentimes our wings of faith can feel paper thin, right! It’s more than uncomfortable to be folded and pressed into all sorts of angels! Not to mention the heights to which our launch pads seem to exist on!! All this reminds me of a story in Genesis…

Paper comes from trees and do you remember the name of the tree Abraham planted in the desert (yes, the desert) in Genesis 22? It was the tamarisk tree! What a risk planting a tamaRISK tree in the desert! Those trees need A LOT of water!! Do you remember what he planted it near? Genesis 21:31 tells us it was at Beersheba that means “well of the oath”. This act of Abraham indicated his faith in his security of his land rights as well as in God that would supply the water in such a desert area!

Are we planting our faith in the well of His promises? We may be in a “desert” but our God can still bring A LOT of water! In Genesis 21:33 God is called Eternal. In our Eternal God, springs of living water will well up within us to eternal life!! That’s a promise I want to plant on, how about you?!

When your wings of faith feel paper thin remember faith is not based on feeling but in the well of God’s eternally faithful promises. You were made to soar on the heights but your fuel will be trust just as it was for Abraham. God will match each pressure fold with His all surpassing power but we have to submit to the way He folds, and to His flight pattern. Only in Him will we find our joyride. A ride that runs so much deeper than mere happiness; it’s where we’ll find our paper wings made strong… strong like eagles wings!

FFF – Friendship For Free

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 40 of 52

Song pick of the week: “Fighting For You” By Adam Agee

A “rainbow” painted just for you: FFF – Friendship For Free – Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 NIV

When God is your best friend He makes you able to also be a friend to others. In 1 Samuel 18-20 we see two best friends that by any human standard should have been the worst enemies. Jonathan was next in line to be King yet God had chosen David to take the throne. Johnathan’s father was also extremely jealous of David and his battle accomplishments. Jonathan had everything to lose in befriending David yet Johnathan decided to get behind that which God backed. Jonathan didn’t need a reason from God as to why David was chosen and not him for the throne, he just chose to trust God’s way. So secure was Johnathan in God’s love for him that he could freely give love from the overflow of God’s love in his own heart.

It takes courage to be a friend or to act friendly, in unfriendly situations. Nehemiah, Saul and David all declared the faithful commitment of God toward them in difficult situations. They knew in all things God was their best and closest friend; they never stood alone. In Christ YOU never stand alone.

God humbled Himself, becoming poor, He died for us while we were still sinners that we might become rich in His love and eternal life! …Freely you have received; freely give. Matthew 10:8

Eaten Alive!

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16)

Song pick: “Way Maker” By Leeland

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Eaten Alive! – if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV

Considering the “plague” of our current year (2020) the passage in Exodus 10:13-15 really hits home. An east wind is recorded having brought a plague of locusts that arrived over night and over the entire country! It was the worst locust plague in Egyptian history. The land was darkened and all living plants and fruit that had survived past storms were annihilated.

Maybe it’s not our current pandemic, maybe it’s not locusts for you, but any unconfessed sin can eat us alive just the same as any plague. Sin leaves no survivors, it can happen overnight, leaving all you once knew, dark and dead. Whether it’s something like murder and all the world knows, or bitter unforgivness harbored in your own heart, it will all separate us from His Light of true abundant life.

Exodus 10:17 records Pharaoh crying out, “Forgive my sin…” and then by verse 19, “The LORD responded…” How did God respond?! He listened and shifted the wind like only Almighty God can! (19)…shifting the wind, and the strong west wind blew the locusts into the Red Sea.

Do you, dear one, need a west wind? Cry out to Almighty God who loved you so much He sent His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in His sacrifice in our place for our sin, past present and future, will be cleansed, forgiven, redeemed, made new! As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 NIV And just as God Almighty hurled those locusts into the Red Sea, Micah 7:19 of His living Word tells us, You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. AND dear one if that is not enough in Joel 2:25 God Almighty says, “I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten– He is able dear one, if we will lose the grip on our illusion of control and find enemy defeating power in full surrender to God’s unfailing love.

Pit To Palace

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 38 of 52

Song pick of the week: “Only You Can” by Jeremy Camp

See the source image

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Pit To Palace – He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and the mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. Psalm 40:2 NIV

Can you relate to Joseph from Genesis 37? I mean, here in verse 24 we get just a snapshot of this poor guys situation… Then they took him and cast him into a pit. And the pit was empty; there was no water in it. Okay so nothing about this verse makes me want to be him!! Cast into a pit, and to make sure we don’t misunderstand, this was an EMPTY pit… no fun colored balls, not even water!!

Long story short, Joseph gets pulled from the pit, paid for by the enemy, sold into slavery by his own family, drug through the dessert for thirty days and ends up in a foriegn land practically in culture shock! I don’t know about you but I’m still not wanting to be this guy!

Lean in closer my friend, sometimes you have to read beyond the semicolon in your own life! Don’t place a period where God places a semicolon! Look to His word and faithful promises when we feel stuck in the desert or at the bottom of a pit with the enemy placing bets over our failure. God says through His sacrifice on the cross we were bought at a price, set free from the bondage of sin, we are His as believers! Don’t let the enemy trick you into selling him something he can’t have!

Sometimes it takes a desert, a culture shock, to remind us the only thing saturated with true water for my soul is the one true God who remains constant, sure and faithfully by my side no matter what pit I find myself in!

Our God was thrown in a pit once too… a tomb shaped pit full of death. Jesus resurrected and walked out so that not one, no not one, of His kids has to have a story that ends in a pit! Our guy Joseph ends up saving his people and leading in the palace!! The PALACE!! Who would have thought?! Only our God who got out of the tomb ALIVE can bring a life from pit to palace. Let Him hold your hand, He’ll lead you the whole way Home to His palace in heaven dear one. For you don’t belong in the pit, you were made for the palace!

Abolish Or Accomplish

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 37 of 52

Song pick of the week: “Do Everything” by Steven Curtis Chapman

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Abolish Or Accomplish – Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. Matthew 5:17 NLT

Some days I just have to wonder… is my life abolishing or accomplishing the purposes of God?! Jesus clarified for us that His purpose was to accomplish the purpose of the law held up in the Old Testament. There were three categories of law: ceremonial, civil, and moral. The ceremonial law primarily pointed forward to the coming of Jesus (Ex. Lev. 1:2-3).  Now that He has come those laws don’t literally apply however the principle behind them, to love and worship a holy God most certainly still does apply. The civil law applied to daily living (Ex. Deut. 24:10-11). Since so much of our world has changed it makes it near impossible to carry out literally however Jesus demonstrated the principles behind such conduct of which  most certainly can be followed today. The moral law like the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17), still requires strict obedience and reveals the nature and will of our God.

Over time the people had strayed so far from the principles behind the law which was to guide people to love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength that when Jesus spoke of a new way it was really to get back to the original intent instead of muddling around in a confusing mass of rules and regulations that kept everyone from seeing a clear picture of God!

Without intentionality we too are in danger of following all the rules on the outside without allowing God to touch one iota of our hearts and minds on the inside. When we face difficulty it’s easy to fall back into our hang-ups or validate our shortcomings however that only leads to a numbing of the soul. What happens just before someone freezes to death? They go numb. It’s excruciatingly painful to be rubbed back from the state of numbness but that pain is what saves your life. Jesus came to restore relationship status between God and man. Jesus came to die in our place, conquering the grave, death and the devil for us!! Jesus accomplished His purpose on earth so that we could accomplish ours in Him, for Him, with Him!! What a gift of AMAZING GRACE!! Don’t go numb or refuse to break through the pain that is keeping you in a state that is only abolishing God’s great and mighty purpose for your life.

Our righteousness does not come from ourselves but what God does in us. Can we go beyond the law and live by the principles behind the law, living God centered instead of self centered? Can we live in reverence of God and not for the approval of people? Are we just as concerned about our heart’s attitude that people don’t see as what they can see?

Dear one, let’s both live our gift of today toward accomplishing not abolishing God’s GREAT purpose for our lives! Isaiah 61:10 NIV I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels..

Embrace Your “Ox”

2020-08-14 10.20.52

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 36 of 52

Song pick of the week: “Never Stop” by Urban Rescue

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Embrace Your “Ox” – Where no oxen are, the manager is clean, But much revenue comes by the strength of the ox. Proverbs 14:4 (NASB)

There I am one moment scrubbing my glass sliding back door with windex and the next I’m stepping back to survey my handiwork… only to notice that about knee level my little munchkin… with his face plastered like a blowfish to the freshly cleaned glass, and yes, that is drool I detect not excess windex sliding down the glass in between the two little hands smudged against the window that WAS clean! This event followed that of cleaning toothpaste from every orifice this child found available, on himself and in his room! Some days you can only laugh till you cry or maybe cry till you laugh right! Proverbs 14:4 reminds me there is life with the “oxen” and there is life without the “oxen” but life WITH the “oxen” produces an opportunity for pressure that produces power I otherwise would have known nothing about!

God’s available power always matches the pressure we are under, always (2 Cor. 4:7-10); just as His comfort always matches our suffering (2 Cor. 1:3-5). He is all sufficient (2 Cor. 12:9). The question remains will we receive it? He gives not as the world gives and holds out peace of mind and heart. The kind we won’t find in the “self help” aisle! Why? Well what is the common denominator in all our problems? If they’re OUR problems we are in each one right?!! We are not the solution but part of the problem so we are going to need WAY more then the “self help” aisle!

Daniel 6:6-24 reminds me of a man who was unphased by extreme lion devouring pressure! Good golly how?! What was his secret? Daniel had a secret weapon. A secret weapon is small right, it’s something that can be concealed. His weapon was unseen yet mighty. Daniel was a prayer warrior and he welded his relationship with God through it daily. When the “oxen” came against Daniel he remained unshaken because he knew his God was unshakable. When the law had been signed, all but sealing Daniels’ sure death, what did he do?! …he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God. Daniel 6:10 NLT No frantic panic just peace of mind and heart as he did what he always did (John 14:27)… trusting God to be bigger than his “ox”(Is. 59:1), trusting God to use the “ox” for good (Rom. 8:28), trusting that God would not leave him alone with the “ox” (Josh. 1:9).

When under pressure what’s your unseen secret weapon? May we be like Daniel and embrace our “ox” through the secret weapon of unceasing prayer! Where there is pressure there is power and often it’s only through the strength of the “ox” that we find the overcoming strength of heaven was in us all along.

Ships Sail Or Fail On The Fuel Of “What if…”

Reigning Rainbows Devotional  (Matt. 13:16) – 35 of 52

Song picks of the week: “What If” by Matthew West “What If We” by 3FOR3

A “rainbow” painted just for you: Ships Sail Or Fail On The Fuel Of “What If…”- But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God. Acts 5:39 (NIV)

“What if’’s” take us in one of two directions. We can formulate “What if’’s” in our mind that stop all forward motion in our lives; “What if I fail?!” OR we can formulate “What if’s” in our lives that launch us forward in faith; “What if I sail?!”. The key is the wisdom to know what fuels your “what if”.

Solomon yoked up with Hiram (1 Kings 10:22) setting sail trading ships of Tarshish once every three years with great success! Jehoshaphat however yoked up with the enemy (quite possibly with the best of intentions) (2 Chron. 20:36, 1 Kg. 22:48) and yet their trading ships for Tarshish were destroyed in their home port even before setting sail!

I believe the difference is clearly seen in Matthew 14, yet another ship story. Verse 22 tells me God made them get in the boat and God sent them out to go before Him. Yes there was a severe storm but when it’s God who sends you out, yokes you up and is your rear guard (Is. 52:12) your ship will sail and not fail!

How do we know if God is behind us? Has God commanded you like He did Peter in Matt. 14:29 to “come.”? The confirmation is in the command dear one. Peter was the first (and only) regular guy to walk on water (W.O.W.) and he got no details, just the command to “Come.” But see, Peter was of the mindset… “What if it’s God?! (Matt. 14:28) Peter didn’t say, “What if it’s not real guys, what if I’m just seeing things, hearing things?! Well you better just hide me under these sandbags friends cuz I’m out! The waves are too big, the wind too strong, I’m no match.” No! Peter’s pallet was wet for adventure and God had sent his boat out! We only get one life… let’s not leave anything left over that He intended for us to use! Peter stepped out of the boat that day… and sank. Yes, but it was not because he had not been given the ability to walk on water (w.O.W.) or that he had not heard the call correctly to come… Peter sank because he doubted (Matt. 14:31, James 1:6). We won’t ever sail to truly amazing heights in our own abilities. Only as long as we are stayed in Him, fixed on Him and not on the impossibilities of the circumstances around us will we “walk on water”. Let God worry about the impossibilities as we just fix our heart and mind on I-AM-possible. (Ex. 3:14, Matt. 19:26)

Today ask your “what if…” in faith. Listen for His command and obey without doubt, this, no doubt, is not easy. Jesus waited until the fourth watch to come out to the men in the boat during the storm that night… the FOURTH WATCH! Anyone else feel like they are in the fourth watch of the night (that is the last one and in a storm it can feel like FOREVER to get that last watch just before day break right!!!!?!!) However God never lost sight of that boat containing a most precious cargo, He never lost control of the storm so why did He wait? Sometimes it takes a storm to find your worship, to gain weight in the area of trust and it’s trust that enables our boat to sail on the heights of the waves without falter! (Matt. 14:33) Let’s use the storm to strengthen our trust in His timing and total control.

If God has sent out your boat, trust His voice if He calls YOU out… Trust Him. P.S. (Peter Say’s) “…and if you happen to falter on the pitch like I did, just remember, you got no better Catcher.” But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out. “Lord save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him… (Matthew 14:30-31) Has He put wind in your sail?! Oh What if you “sailed” today dear one! What if you sailed!!

Build A Rainbow Bridge: (Deut. 6:6-9)

MEMORIZE: Acts 5:39 with someone

PRAY/READ: Matthew 14:22-33 and Isaiah 41:9-10

DISCUSS: What “what if’s” are circling your heart today? How are you investigating what fuels them? Faith or fear?

ACT: Sometimes the hardest call or command God can give is to stay. Act on what He has called you to do today and whether it is to physically go or stay, always stay your mind and heart on Him and don’t doubt – choose trust.

“Rainbows” Remembered Never Fade: (Deut. 4:9) How you’ve observed God’s faithfulness this week.
